The IRS Small Business and Self-Employed (SBSE) business unit has released its Fiscal 2021 Focus Guide, titled “It’s Still the Time,” to lay out the compliance and service strategies for the coming year. This document provides an overview for both internal and external audiences to understand the agency operational priorities for SBSE’s audit and collection activities, which continues to focus on the health and safety of employees and taxpayers. The 2021 edition presents the SBSE’s priorities and organizational goals that support the overall IRS mission and strategic plan for the coming year. Each SBSE operating unit provided the source material for 2021 edition.
According to the Focus Guide, one of the Unit’s areas of focus is to strengthen compliance activities, by:
- Taking enforcement action every time it is appropriate (consider COVID-19 impact).
- Taking action to mitigate risks of noncompliance and evolving threats.
- Expanding use of all civil penalties including those used infrequently.
- Using the badges of fraud to identify and develop civil and criminal fraud cases.
The Focus Guide also highlights ways to improve operation efficiency, maintain a taxpayer-focused organization, ensure awareness and collective understand, leverage technology and data analytics, and develop the SBSE workforce. The Focus Guide can be found here.
