Happy September! September is a month for ‘back to school,’ and ‘back to work.’ As summer draws to a close, we might feel the cool breezes of Fall. Or not, since we are in San Francisco, where often September and October are among the warmest months of the year. We always chuckle seeing the tourists freeze in June or July, realizing that often the best months to head to Ocean Beach are September and October. What did Mark Twain say? “The coldest winter he ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”
So here we are at September. Our lively September, 2015, San Francisco Tax Tips Bulletin, looks towards the Fall, and focuses on some recent Supreme Court decisions that can affect your taxes. With the stock market plunge, another topic is how losses in your capital gains account can be carried forward in time. Here are the topics of interest for September:
- Past Losses Offer Winning Opportunities – a discussion of how losses in your investments can, and cannot, be used to counter profits.
- Supreme Court Decision May Affect State Taxes – Maryland got into hot water over its county income tax. (To read an interesting side article on county and city income taxes, click here.)
- Ongoing Responsibility for Retirement Plans – the Supreme Court was pretty intense, ruling that businesses have a long-term fiduciary duty vis-a-vis their retirement plans.
- Tax Calendar – important tax deadlines coming up in September and October, 2015.
“Fall is among the most beautiful seasons in the San Francisco Bay Area,” commented Chun Wong, CPA, managing partner at Safe Harbor LLP. “With the recent plunge in the stock market, however, we advise our clients to always be prepared for the best – and the worst – whether it is in investments, or in the weather.”
