The IRS has encouraged taxpayers to use official IRS social media accounts and e-News services to stay informed and avoid false tax information online. Social media can be a helpful way to get updates about tax changes, IRS announcements and important reminders. However, the IRS warned that scams and misleading tax advice are common on social media. Therefore, taxpayers should rely on verified IRS sources to get accurate and trustworthy information.
The IRS said taxpayers can follow its verified accounts on X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn for tax tips, news updates, scam alerts and other helpful information. In addition, the agency reminded taxpayers that it never uses social media to ask for personal, financial or tax account information. The IRS also encouraged taxpayers to sign up for e-News services, which provide updates for individuals, small businesses, tax professionals and Spanish-speaking taxpayers. Moreover, the agency cautioned taxpayers against following online “tax hacks” that may encourage filing inaccurate tax returns or claiming credits they are not eligible to receive. Taxpayers can find official IRS social media accounts through IRS Social Media Accounts and subscribe to IRS email updates through IRS e-News Subscriptions.
