The IRS has issued guidance urging taxpayers to take several important steps in advance of the 2026 federal tax filing season, which opens on January 26. Individuals are encouraged to create or access their IRS Individual Online Account to view account details, manage payments and protect sensitive tax information. Taxpayers should begin gathering essential records such as Forms W-2, 1099, and documentation of digital asset transactions. Those who earned income through gig work or online platforms may receive Form 1099-K or 1099-DA. Regardless of whether such forms are received, all filers must answer the digital asset question on Form 1040. The IRS also reminds taxpayers of new requirements under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill. To claim certain credits, taxpayers and their spouses must have valid Social Security numbers or ITINs issued by the return’s due date. Expired ITINs must be renewed, and direct deposit is strongly recommended as the IRS moves away from issuing paper refund checks.
